Red Queens and Internet Dreams

I cannot remember the last time I actually picked up a DVD and used it to watch a movie. I use Netflix, Hulu, Drama Fever, Apple Store and Amazon Prime for all of my entertainment needs. I suppose for me, internet streaming has replaced the old technology completely. When this kind of replacement happens society wide it become an example of a red queen in tech speak. This was discussed in the video casts by Thornburg in the Walden resources. This same idea has been discussed in the scientific world as the red queen hypothesis. The idea that evolutionary changes in one organisms can lead to the extinction of another(Van Valen, 1973). It is interesting that living things follow the same basic pattern as technology and its acceptance into society.
Thornburg (2008) mentions the need for students to understand emerging technologies to better prepare for the future and how it will effect them. I believe this is why DVD and streaming are included in the tetrad because it is happening right now. We are analyzing a red queen phenomenon in real time and it helps us to better understand what will be happening in our future.

  1. I agree that our students should understand emerging technologies. It has made for great discussions in my classroom. I believe that our students are one of the determining factors of a technology emerging. If you can get them to adopt it, it has a good chance of emerging.

  2. Video-on-demand and internet streaming saves money, as well. Besides not DVDs, I save money by not going to theaters. It has to be a definite posiblity that I'd like it. Just cause the previews seem good, the movies aren't. It's all about emerging technologies to make usage less time consuming. The more users of the technology, the less likely it will become obsolete.

  3. Video on demand or video streaming is an interesting topic. In reading your post generated the following question. This last weekend I went to a local Regal Entertainment Theater and outside on the wall it posted that the movies are played via 100% digital content (video streaming) How long do you think it would take movie producers to completely do away with movie theaters altogether and allow the end user to pay a fee to watch new releases of films over the Internet in the comfort of their own homes?

  4. I just can't imagine a world without movie theaters. The theater is where I can relax and tune out the world. I believe that movies will loose some of their appeal if they a streamed directly to the home rather than shown on a theater screen. But then again depending on the cost of first run movies at home instead of the movies theater, maybe I wouldn't feel so bad when I pay to see a movie that turns out to be a disappointment or a flop.
